johnny depp Studying Johnny Depp

Every year I try to pick an actor or actress to study to learn more about their films. I always try to pick a star that is truly unique in the choice of characters and the way that those characters are presented. It’s actually not that easy to do. Most movie stars get typecast into certain roles and don’t really do much beyond that single type of character.

Last year I studied the films of Ryan Phillippe. I failed to pick a star to study this year but I’m thinking that I may start late and study up on Johnny Depp. He’s a really unique actor who plays very different types of roles than what most people are playing. And even with those roles that are stereotypical, he manages to spin them in a unique way.

I’ve seen some of his films. Ones I particularly liked were From Hell and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. But I’m interested in checking out more of what he has to offer. I’ve heard that he’s playing The Mad Hatter in an upcoming release of Alice in Wonderland and I think that’s going to be an amazing role to see him in so I’d like to gain some insight into his work before that comes out.

Any suggestions on the best Johnny Depp films to make sure to see?

as a former film major and now a writer i embarked on the same journey as you in the fall of 2008. i had always been aware of johnny depp but my career and family kept me going 24/7 with no time for other pursuits. i don’t believe i had even seen a johnny depp film until august 2008 and that was on fios…potc3.

this is the path i took and would recommend as it shows depp’s growth both as an actor and his development into what many consider the finest character actor of his generation. gilbert grape, by the way, is tied for my #1 favorite film along with the deerhunter.

@ pamela … Thanks so much for your insight into viewing Depp’s films. Looks like a great approach and you included some here that I’ve never seen.

i began viewing depp’s work in this order:
    1. arizona dream
    2. edward scissorhands
    3. benny & joon
    4. what’s eating gilbert grape
    5. don juan de marco
    6. donnie brasco
    7. fear and loathing in las vegas
    8. the ninth gate
    9. sleepy hollow
    10. the man who cried
    11. chocolat
    12. the curse of the black pearl
    13. dead man’s chest 14. neverland
    15. the libertine
    16. secret window

then, if you’re so inclined, you can fill in with the rest of his completed work. happy viewing.

his upcoming work includes public enemies due this summer, alice in wonderland, rango, and the rum diary ( now filming in puerto rico ).

as for my fall 2009 project, i’m thinking al pacino or leonardo decaprio…isn’t film wonderful?
