Tea Tasting in San Francisco’s Chinatown

My sister recently visited here for about ten days. One of her very favorite things to do in San Francisco is to go to the free tea tasting in Chinatown so we do that pretty much every time she visits and this visit was no exception.

There are quite a few places where you can go tea tasting in Chinatown here. Most of them are along Grant Street and you can easily recognize them since they have a big sign out front that says tea tasting. In fact, I noticed this time when we were walking around there that there seem to be even more places to do tea tasting than there were the last few times we went.

We always go to the same place. I think it’s called Vital Tea Leaf. They know my sister by now (she does always buy stuff when we’re there) and are always welcoming. When you go, you simply sit down at a long table and the folks behind the counter will pour various teas for you to try and tell you about the different health benefits of each of them.

This time we tried a new tea, a very rare tea that comes from some high mountaintop and costs a whopping $800 per pound. I confess that my tea palate isn’t refined enough to really know the difference between that and a $10 per pound tea but it was clean and clear and tasty enough. We also tried a milk oolong that was new to us and it had a creamy taste to it that was pretty interesting. My favorite tea remains the rose tea, which is pretty much the only one I ever end up buying.
