Social sharing through visual images seems to be the hot thing right now, doesn’t it? After being a quiet player on the scene for a couple of years, Pinterest has completely taken off with people repinning like crazy. I was actually on Pinterest from the get go but I, too, have started using it more in the past several months because of the fact that everyone else is using it.

So have you seen that there’s a new similar site called Clipix? Now I’m not typically one for jumping on the bandwagon of the latest new social networking thing. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. In this case, I’m playing around with Clipix a bit even though it’s very similar to Pinterest.

Why? Well, there are two reasons. First of all, I’ve kept my Pinterest boards almost exclusively about crochet. I use it mostly to connect with people who know me through my crochet website, Crochet Concupiscence. I use it to share what I’ve posted on my crochet site and to find new things to post there. So I haven’t really used any of the non-crochet stuff on the site even though there’s lots of beautiful pins there.

That leaves Clipix open for me to actually Pin tons of different things. I’m playing around with that side of Pinterest, instead of focusing on crochet there, and that’s part of why I’m enjoying it so much. I’ve got boards for shoes, fashion, travel, art and beautiful things.

And I also have a board for interesting articles which brings me to the second reason that I like Clipix – you can pin links to articles instead of just pictures. It’s not the main feature of the site but it’s a feature that I really like. It gives me a different options than “bookmarks” for storing things I want to be able to come back to and I like that.

I also think that there’s a really good social aspect to Clipix, better than what Pinterest seems to be offering, but I haven’t explored it extensively yet. So, we’ll see. The jury’s still out but I’m enjoying playing for now.

Last week I had the chance to go see a sword demonstration over at the Asian Art Museum. The demo was by a well-respected Japanese master of his type who has been practicing the art of the sword for over 50 years. Today’s photo features him with three of his students at that demonstration.

I have a series of art pieces up in my room. Each is a photo of an individual that I took out of a magazine. I then glued it to canvas and painted on top of it to change the original image. Today’s photo is a picture of one of those art pieces. What do you think of photos of art?

The photo of the day is back. I don’t know if other people are too interested in this Diary of a Smart Chick feature since nobody responded in the comments when I asked for feedback about it but I like posting photos so I’m going to keep it up for now. Today’s picture was actually taken by my sister using my camera. We went to check out the ruins of the Sutro Baths. I’ve photographed them before but my sister had an interesting twist on them. Whereas I primarily focused on the ruins, she focused on the ocean beyond the ruins and got only a bit of the ruins in the picture. I like it. Do you?

I’ve been doing a “photo of the day” on this blog all month long. I’m really enjoying doing that. It helps me to look at the photos I take with a more discerning eye. It also helps to keep me motivated to take pictures of things on a regular basis so I can share them so steadily. I think it’s good for me.

I wouldn’t consider myself a photo blogger though. I am really mostly a writer who likes playing around with pictures. Perhaps as I get better and better about taking photographs and learning how to use image editing software then I’ll start to get more into doing my own photo-rich blogs. Or maybe not.

I definitely do appreciate looking at great photo blogs though. There’s one in particular that I wanted to mention because I am consistently so impressed by the photos on it. It’s called Remodeling this Life. I found it in my search for simple living blogs and blogs about frugality. There are definitely some great thoughts on those topics. But I have to admit that I go here daily mostly for the eye candy.

The blogger just takes really great pictures. They are the kind of pictures I’d love to take one day. I love the bright colors, the great composition and the way that she captures daily life with her own perspective. They’re photos to be admired and adored!

I’ve decided to start doing something new in July. I’m going to add photos to this blog. I take a lot of pictures. I take pictures of the things that I’m doing and the people that I’m with. I take pictures of the flowers that I buy for my home and the projects that I’m engaged in around the house. A lot of these photos just end up sitting on my computer for years and years. After all, you can only hang and scrapbook so many images. I’d like to put them to some sort of use and I figured that this blog was a great place to do that.

I figured I’d start this new project off today, on the last day of June, with a photo roundup of some of the things that I did this month. Hope you enjoy!
